I love this saying popularized by Mark Twain. It really underscores how numbers and figures can be used in a vacuum just to prove a point.
“Figures often beguile me,” he wrote, “particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: ‘There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.'”
To me, statistic really only have meaning when they’re presented in context and you are given the chance to question them and investigate further.
