My daughter, Izzy, has been raising milkweed in our backyard and has raised no fewer than 5 monarch butterflies this summer. We have one left that is still in it’s pupa stage for one or two more days. With tropical storm Jose about to reach us up here in MA, we’re thinking that we need to keep this little guy indoors until the wind and rain passes. Unfortunately, this will delay its trip towards Mexico! (We hope it can make it, but it seems late in the season.)
There are so many interesting things to know about monarch butterflies. Here’s one site that attempts to capture many interesting facts about these impressive creatures.
- How many times do their wings flap in a minute?
- Why do they fly like they’re dizzy (referring to erratic flight)?
- What kind of tags are used on the butterflies, so as not to weigh them down?
- Can monarchs hear?
- How do monarchs breathe?
